Outside Reading
Some great books don't have a ReadnQuiz quiz yet. With Outside Reading, you can still give a student full credit for reading one.
An Outside Reading book counts just like a passed quiz:
- The student gets the book's points and words, and it counts as a book read
- It shows up in every report
- It counts toward the student's goals
- It earns Q Bucks, including any nonfiction bonus, when your Q Bank term is active
Add a Book
- Open the student's page and click Outside Reading
- Fill in the form:
- Title
- Level: Lexile or ATOS, whichever your school uses.
- Points:
- Words:
- Book Type:
- Category: Fiction or Nonfiction
- Date Read: today, unless you change it. It can't be a future date.
- Click Add Outside Reading.
The book is recorded as a passed quiz with a score of 10/10 (100%), dated the day it was read.
Tip: Check ARBookfind.com for points, level and words
If ReadnQuiz Already Has a Quiz
If ReadnQuiz has a quiz with the same title, you'll see a note with its Quiz #. The student should take that quiz instead. Recording the book as Outside Reading and taking the quiz would give credit twice. If it's a different book that happens to share the title, click Add Anyway.
How It Differs from a Quiz
- It doesn't change the student's DRL (Dynamic Reading Level). Without a quiz, there's nothing to measure comprehension.
- There are no questions to review. The quiz details page shows “Outside Reading. There are no questions to show.”
- The certificate says the student “has successfully read” the book. It shows no score.
- Outside Reading books belong to the student. They don't show up in book searches, recommendations or Most Read Books.
Fixing a Mistake
Click the book in the student's quiz history.
- To change the date or points, use Update Quiz.
- To fix the title or anything else, delete it and add it again. A student can have only one Outside Reading book with the same title.
- Deleting removes it completely, including any Q Bucks it earned.
Titles can't contain <, > or &. Spell out “and” instead.
